Othello 1:3

"Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see:/ She has deceived her father, and may thee." Brabanto (25) 1.3: 287-288.

This quote shows how hurt that his daughter made him feel by marrying Othello. He did love Othello but now his marriage to his only daughter put him in the bad ranking in his book. I think that this is the start of the things that will go wrong in this book. The mariage will no longer symbolize love but the total opposite.

What is going to happen to the newlyweds?

Chapter 13

"Only Phineas never was afraid, only Phineas never hated anyone." - Gene (204)

The quote struck me as how Gene remembers his friend as a compassionate person. Finny was a model of the separate peace. He kept this image throughout the book. He, in my opinion, was the type of person that takes your mind off of something that is drastic in life. I think of Finny as a comedian, or someone that does something to take your mind off of things. Gene is recognizing this and how he should of been more like him.

What does it mean when the author says "if he was indeed the enemy"?

chapter 12 :'[

"'The marrow of his bone.....' I reapeated aimlessly. This at last penetrated my mind. Phineas had died from the marrow of his bone flowing down the blood stream to his heart." Gene (194)

I absolutely sobbed when I read this. Finny the lovable character had just died right before my eyes. If I was Gene I would be extremely lost and confused about the whole thing, that just happened. Gene did not realize it but I do think he was upset and just in shock. Like Gene said numerous times he was apart of Finny. Now that Finny is gone he just wasn't able to cry. I knew for a fact that death was going to come about because of Leper speaking about how the looked as black as death. It is interesting how the author used that and showed a foreshadowing Finny's death. I'm so sad that Finny died. :[

Since Finny's gone :[ How does Gene cope with it and what is Gene's life going to turn out like?

Chapter 11/ very intense chapter

"That's what it was like, if you want to know. The two of them looked as black as- as black as death standing up there with this fire burning all around them." Leper (174)

I liked this quote because mostly of the description. The way Leper says it makes you think about how the sun can make that effect on someone's body image. Another reason why I chose this quote is how he uses that analogy comparing them as black as death. It helps show me the effect of how that whole incident, that was tragic and the fact that Leper used those colors in the quote. Colors symbolize things, and the fact that he used black comparing it to death stuck out to me.

What is going to happen to Finny and Gene's friendship? ahhhhh...

Chapter 10

"You're thinking I'm physcho." Leper (143)

He is off his rocker. He's completely lost his mind. He is a complete creep and if I was Gene,I would want to cry. The training camp made him nuts. Gene still sat through the lunch with him, and went for a walk. I'd be horrified and want his mom to come with me.

Since Leper is off his rocker, will he be returning to Devon?

Chapter 9

"I never thought I'd be going to it. I'm really glad I saw that movie in time, you bet I am." Leper (126)

The quote shows how the war has really come into play in the story. This quote and chapter completely shows how the war is really here, and how serious it has on the characters. The fact that they were in the beginning  just having the times of their lives to not caring about anything but World War II and whether not to enlist or not.

Since people are going off to War, is any of the main characters enlist, and will anyone die?

Chapter 8

"Leave your fantasy out of this. We're grooming you for the Olympics, pal, in 1944." Finny (117)

The quote shows how Finny is a determined and well minded. He is a good friend, and is trying to get Gene's mind off of enlisting in the war. It is a good example of how Finny's personality is shown throughout the book.

Does Gene enlist in the war?

Homework Chapter 7

"I'll be you've got a lot of theories, Come on, reconstruct the crime. There we were at the tree. Then what happened, Sherlock Holmes?" -Gene (91)

The quote made me laugh a lot because of Gene's sarcastic and humorous way of speaking. Not only is he, his normal self, but he starts to show traits like Finny.Gene is trying to get his way out of an issue, by being funny and managing to get out of it. This shows how Gene's psychotic obsession with Finny is playing out, by becoming him.

What is going to happen to Gene since Finny is back to Devon?

Homework Chapter 6

"Listen pal, if I can't play sports, you're going to play them for me." Finny (85)

The quote shows how determined Finny is in his friendship with Gene. Finny wants Gene to fulfill Finny's dream by playing sports. He wants the best for Gene. He then realizes in this point of the story that he needs to become a part of Finny. When that was said it was weird because he starting to show his obsession with Phineas.

My question is Will Gene try to split his personality and turn into Phineas?

Homework 11/20

quote: "Oh no, I wouldn't do that, and that was the most false thing, the biggest lie of all."

The quote I chose is after Gene admitted to Finny that he shook the limb. He had to play it off saying that he was out of it and he was speaking out of lack of sleep. Then Gene said he had to go back to Devon and he was late. Finny just said when did you start following the rules. The quote made me have a weird feeling about Gene. He made his character feel less trustworthy and how he would lie to Finny like that. His actions just show that he tells Finny one thing and just does not do it. Kind of like being two-faced. I don't know but he gives me a weird vibe.

Question: Will Gene's confession come back up in a later time? and Will Gene do something else that will hurt or effect Finny badly?

homework 11/18

quote: "Come out a little way, " he said, "and then we'll jump side by side." Finny (59)
This is an adventerous move by Finny. Gene was frightened from jumping out of the tree was asked to jump out of it with Finny. This shows how Gene puts much faith in Finny and they both try to jump out of the tree together. This shows the faith Gene puts in him and how much Finny influences Gene to go things. This quote also reminds me of a "separate peace" like we metioned in class because we see them doing an adventerous thing together. Also this shows how the boys friendship is getting closer together, but then Finny's drastic falling happens :[

Question: What's going to happen to Finny after the fall?

Monday, November 17, 2008

homework 11/17

Quote: "Yes he had practically saved my life. He had also practically lost it for me." (33)

The quote I believe is foreshadowing a future event that may happen to Finny. The narrator, Gene, is speaking about how Finny saved him from falling. The second part of the statement struck me because of him saying how he practically lost his life for Finny. This seems that something bad might happen to him. Hopefully he this will not result in death.

My question is Do they kids have summer academic classes or do they get to hang around and go to events and play sports?

homework 11/17

"It's you, pal," Finny said to me at last, "just you and me."
The quote is when Gene and Finny realize that they were best friends. They seem to have a close bond, and they seem like they are going to be doing crazy things and getting into trouble doing it.
I have two questions 1. Is the school all boys or co-ed? 2. Does anything bad happen to Finny or Gene?

Gene: caring, believer, sarcastic, kind, and honest. "I never backed down anything in my life."
Phineas: brave, funny, adventurous, speaks his mind, and caring. "If i do it, you're all going to do it, aren't you?"

corruption of power

Essay
Creon’s Corruption of Power
“What lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do,” Aristotle. The quote sums up Creon’s rise and fall through out the plays of Oedipus the King and Antigone. While reading Oedipus the King, Creon is a lovable, altruistic, compassionate person who really cares of his city of Thebes. Then drastically, this eccentric person ,changes in a blink of an eye and turns into a cruel, pompous, sexist, leader that lets money and power go to his head. Nelly Furtado states, “All good things come to an end.”
In the beginning of the Oedipus the King, the reader is introduced to a hero named Oedipus, his wife Jocasta, and her brother Creon. Oedipus is the king of Thebes and has ruled for a while after defeating the sphinx. Creon is pictured in this text as a true being. He is wise and seems laid back and tries to do the right thing. Even when Oedipus accused him as a murderer of the King Laius, he simply said “If he thinks in all this turmoil of our times/ that any word or act of mine/ was ever done in malice, done to harm, / I’d rather end my life than live so wronged.” (28) He seemed mad, but he knew that he was a trustful person. He knew that he would not lie to his loyal friend Oedipus. Creon, “So adamant! So full of disbelief.”(34) This is the last time you see Creon in his old ways before his change and becomes corrupted by power. “Stop this striving to be master of all/ The mastery you had in life has been your fall.” (80)
Grenham #2
Creon is now ruler of Thebes. He has taken control over the city and all his morals that he had when his friend Oedipus was the king has flown out the door. When a person first reads this you would picture Creon as a good leader considering his role in Oedipus the King. His drastic change went from a nice guy to a cruel being. He degraded women throughout the play. He made Antigone, a brave, loyal, and courageous woman who does not care what anyone thinks and will do whatever she has to do. She goes against Creon’s power and has no problem with it. Ismene starts the quote saying “What! Challenge Creon to his face?” (193) and Antigone answers by saying , “He has no right to keep me from my own.” (193) this statement would have never happened, if Creon did not have such an obsessive control over women. He degrades them anyway he can like saying, “One who has more authority than a common slave/ can ill afford to on airs./ And yet, this girl, already versed in disrespect my law,/ the first time she disobeyed my law,/ Now adds a second insult, done it again, and vaunts it to my face.” (211) He is acting like she is a nobody, right to her face and acts like a total jerk. Another example of Creon’s sexism is when he is talking to his son Haemon, “Oh Haemon, don’t loose your balances for a woman’s sake!/ don’t hug a joy that’s cheap and cools:/ an evil woman for your bed and board./ No wound is worse than counterfeited love./ She is poison. Spit her out./ Let her go and find a mate in Hades.” (220) He makes all women seem evil and he has no right to say it. His woman degrading comments are not the only reasons that make Creon have flaws.

Grenham #3
Creon has also realized that he has power and he knows that money and wealth will get far in life. He lets all of this go directly to his head. One specific quote is “And death it is. Bur greed if gain/ has often mad men fools.”(200) This quote foreshadows Creon and how the affect of money has towards him. Another example of power and negative influence is, “Ah, Money! Money is a currency that’s rank / seduces men away from happy homes/ corrupts the honest heart to shifty ways,/ makes men crooked connoisseurs of vice.” (203) the quote shows him change completely.
The way Sophocles uses the context of the book to make the literary ways how Creon developed a new sense of life by just a simple change in power. People may have an affect on how things might turn out on certain things. Oedipus was shown to be corrupted by power in Oedipus the King because he was quick to accuse and not going over the facts of who could of killed the former king. Same with Creon he was quick to punish Antigone, in Antigone. She was trying to bury her brother Polynecius and he had no problem throwing him into a tomb. Sophocles shows the corruption throughout the text by how he words his quotes each character says and make sure that each character has dominance.
The corruption of power is very eminent through out this play because it can be known that power does things to people that make them feel in control and totally forget their old morals. People do not realize it at the time but in reality they do change. Another quote that shows an example of power corruption is "It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power." - David Brin. Creon would have never witnessed his entire family die if he did not try to dictate everything and be back to his old self. The main thing I think is that when you get power
Grenham #4
something takes over you and makes one feel invincible. That was untrue through out the play and turned the main characters depressed.

Homework 10/23

1. "All right then! Take it if you can A corpse for a corpse the price, and flesh for flesh, one of your own begotten." Tiresias

2.Tiresias is speaking to Creon pretty much saying that if he does not free Antigone from the tomb then something bad will happen to him and his family. When Tiresias says these kind of things they come true. The quote is a warning to Creon saying that someone will die that is dear to him. The reality is that Haemon kills himself, Antigone hangs herself, and his wife stabs a dagger through her heart.

My question is does Ismene die with Antigone or is she alive?

"No for life, I choose death." Antigone
In this situation Antigone and Ismene are fighting because of Creon sentencing them, for burying their brother. Antigone is fighting with her sister saying that Creon and her are friends. The quote means that Antigone rather die than live. Ismene said to her that she should let her suffer too, but Antigone said that she would rather die and have Ismene live.
Whose side is Haemon on his father or Antigone?
