up to pg 381

"Yes your Honor. The defendant, Bigger Thomas, plead guilty" (370).

This statement shows that Max does not feel as if Bigger needs the trial for the murder, because Bigger already has all the fingers pointed toward him. Max is trying to have the jury send him away to an Insanse home, instead of a death sentence. This was a tricky approach, because Buckley has a bunch of witnesses pointing him away from the insane theory.

What is going to happen to Bigger?

How is this going to affect him?

"He sank to his knees and sobbed: I don't want to die.... I don't want to die..."(363)

This reason why Bigger sobbed is he because he is now feeling that he is no chance with life.He feels that there is nothing left for him in this world. He tried to express himself to Max, but nothing is left for him to do with his life.

Is Bigger going to be sentenced to death?

What's going to happen?

up to 340 part 3

"It gripped him: that cross was not a cross of Christ, but the cross of the Ku Klux Klan. He had a cross of salvation round his throat and they were burning one to tell him that they hated him!" (338).

This quote shows how of this time there were racist groups that showed their hate towards everyone. They decided to burn crosses which is completely disrespectful, and Bigger realizes this when he sees them. Bigger is now realizing his faith when he sees himself wearing a cross, and it shows how he is begging to lean towards his faith life.

Is Bigger's faith going to show now that he is in jail?

Is the white supremacy going to have an effect on Bigger's verdict?

up to 340 part 2

"They stood in the middle of the floor, crying, with their arms locked about Bigger. Bigger held his face stiff, hating them and himself, feeling the white people along the wall watching. His mother mumbled a prayer, to which the preacher chanted" (300).

The quote shows how much grief the Thomas family is over Bigger. His mother, brother, and sister are all supportive though. The fact that Bigger feels the hatred towards himself shows that he is not pleased with his actions.

How is Bigger's family going to take his sentencing?

How is this going to affect the Thomas'?

up to 340 part 1

"Bigger's eyes looked round the room, as seeking a means of escape. What could he say? He was guilty" (290).

This quote shows that Bigger is no longer feeling in control, but controlled. He is locked up, and has no way to get out. He knows that there is no way for him to be free, he knew he did the crime, and he can't run away from this anymore.

How is Bigger going to feel in jail?
Is he going to have a positive learning experience?

"Crimes such as the Bigger Thomas murders could be lessend by segrating all Negrosnin parks, playgrounds, cafes, theatres and street cars" (280).

This quote shows that the media of this time is representing the black community because of Bigger's actions. It is cruel because the people of this time are just sterotyped. The fact that they are banning all of them, is cruel and shows that all the people of this time are shown as racist.

Why is the media making Bigger look that bad?

Why are there sterotypes?

end of fear

"he stopped at a ledge and looked back; he saw in the lurid glare of the slashing lamces of light a man stumbling over snow" (265).

this quote is significant because the fact that Bigger is feeling these emotions before he is found. Bigger has been through a rough patch in his life. Now that he is sneaking around, his life of crime will still continue.

What is going to happen to Bigger now that he was arrested?

Is he going to survive at the end of the story?

pg 183

"yes; Bessie was blind" (174).

This quote is significant because it relates to the terms of how some of the characters in the story are unaware of the things that go on. Bessie was completely out in the dark, until Bigger told her what happend to Mary. Even though she knows what goes on, i think she is completely unaware of what Bigger can do.

What is Bessie going to do, is she going to snitch?

How is this going to affect Bigger with the note involved?

"She tried to talk to him about the unions when she first saw him yesterday. If that Jan gave him those pamphlets, then he knows nothing about it" (161).

The quote shows how Mr. Dalton is trying to show Bigger's innocence which is not true at all. The fact that he is trying to convince the dective this, I think he is trying to convince himself that this poor black man of this time would not commit a crime like this especially towards a white rich woman.

Is Bigger going to get arrested?
What is Jan going to say?

up to 140

"The thought of what he had done, the awful horror of it, the daring associated with such actions, formed for him for the first time in his fear-ridden life a barrier of protection between him and a world he feared. He had murdered and had created a new life for himself" (105).

This quote is Bigger describing that he wants a new beginning and killing Mary is making him fearless. He feels complete and invincible. This scanerio which we would think was tragic would be known as a new begging to Bigger.

What is going to happen to Bigger?

Is he going to jail?

end of book 1

" The, convulsiveky, he sucked his breath in and huge words formed slowly, ringing in his ears: She's dead" (86).

This quote is tragic for Bigger because he just murdered a white woman. Not only does this affect him it affects his family and his friends. This accident will have many people looking for Bigger. This is going to affect Chicago because the Dalton's are a high class family, and they are very poweful. With Mary's death, it shows a modern sterotype for blacks of this time.

How is this going to affect Bigger?

IS he going to run away?

"How far did you get in school? 8th grade"

This quote means that Biggers education was not full. He is represents the modern black man of the society in this day in age. Jan and Mary also make him feel extremly awkward and insecure.

Why is Bigger insecure?
What is going to happen to Jan and Mary?

"You see Bigger, I'm a supporter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People" (53).

This quote shows that Bigger's employer was not a sterotypical person of this time period. Mr. Dalton seems very trustworthy and Bigger seems that he has something good going for him. Bigger should keep this job and realize that he has something good going for him.

Is Bigger's infatuation with Mary going to turn out to something?
Is Gus and Bigger going to become friends again.

"'Lets play white' Bigger said, referring to the game of playacting in which he and his friends imitated the ways and manners of white folks" (17).

The quote shows how Bigger, GH, Jack and Gus, are affected by the actions of white people in this time. The boys are simply acting out of how they believe the white people are of this time. The fact that the boys are doing this shows how they are mistreated.

Why are the people of this time so cruel?

Is Bigger going to the job interview?

1984 Essay

Is Winston, a hero, failure, or an average man?

In many novels like Oedipus, A Separate Peace and others, the main characters are shown to have certain qualities. They are heroic, complete failures or an average person. In 1984 Winston has the quality of failure. Winston had all the qualities to stand up against the party but he did not use these to the best of his ability. Winston failed because of his lack of confidence, his loyalty to the party and his mistakes.

Confidence is a great trait to have within a person. In 1984, Winston completely lacks this quality in many ways. Winston is introduced as a 39 year old out of shape man. Winston was always putting himself down because of his size. He shows a perfect example of his lack of confidence when he is with Julia for the first time, “I’m thirty-nine years old. I’ve got a wife that I can’t get rid of. I’ve got varicose veins. I’ve got false teeth” (120). The quote shows how Winston does not have any confidence in himself and how he is so bold with his self consciousness. Another example of Winston’s lack of confidence is when he and Julia are in Mr. Charrington’s shop. Winston says that he is afraid they are going to die: “We are the dead” (134). The small quote shows how Winston is convinced everything he does is bad and he does not know what to believe in. If he just had this quality he would have been a hero.

Grenham 2

Winston says many times that he is going to rebel against the party. It seems very believable at first but he ends up chickening out. The first instance when he says he is going to rebel against the party, “That was above all what he wanted to hear. Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct, the simple undiffereniated desire: that was the force that would tear the part apart” (126). The significance of this quote is that Winston actually believes that he is going against the party. The truth is that he lets his loyalty get in the way. Winston’s loyalty comes to show when he is put into 101: “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to her bones. Not me Julia! Not me!” (286). This shows that Winston fell for the Party’s tricks and shows that he falls under what they say. His insecurities made him stay loyal to the Party even after Winston left the Ministry of Love, “He loved Big Brother” (298). Winston said that he wanted to rebel, but he was too much of a coward.

Winston made a lot of mistakes throughout the story. The most known one is telling O’Brien to put the rats on Julia. That was not the only one though. One mistake that Winston and Julia both made is not checking Mr. Charrington’s shop out completely. If they did a careful expecting of the place they would have not gone through the pain and suffering at the Ministry of Love. This happened when they found a telescreen behind the picture: “It was from behind the picture” (221). Another mistake Winston made is going along with all of O’Brien’s demands. If Winston was strong he would have kept his mouth shut and taken the pain as a warrior.

Grenham 3

Winston was not hero. He had so much potential if he set his mind to it. He said he was going to rebel against the party and the only thing he did was go along with it. He betrayed his love, Julia. Winston seemed that he could have an impact of tearing the party apart. The only thing he did was make it stronger. Winston is a wimp. He had the chance to change the party but he let it go and make himself a failure.

the enddd

"He released Winston with a little push towards the guards. 'Room 101' he said" (282).

This sentence from O'Brien is Winston's breaking point. He was fell for the system in this room. He realized that he can't change the system. O'Brien tortured him with rats, like scaring someone, and right then and there Winston broke down and told them to torture Julia. This quote shows the end of our fallen hero, and how he states he loves Big Brother.

3.3 *

"You know the party slogan 'freedom is slavery'. Has it ever occurred to you that it is reversible? Slavery is freedom" (264).

The quote has significance because the fact that Winston is getting brain washed it shows that the party does and will always have control. The slogan in reality is reversed. But the question is its reversed in our reality but what would it be in theirs? The point of it is though the party is the alpha it will never end. Its infinite there is no way that it can get shut down.

uninhabited Having no residents; not inhabited.

reintegration restoration to a unified state.

up to page 260 :)

"To cure you! To make you sane!" (253).

This statement made by O'Brien shows that the party is insane. They have been injecting Winston with needles, they're talking about how he has four or five fingers, and he is making things up. The party would scare the crap out of me and make me realize that they have complete control over these people and they are filled with fear.

embezzlement:to appropriate fraudulently to one's own use, as money or property entrusted to one's care.

blissfulExtreme happiness; ecstasy.

3.1 and stuff

"They got me along time ago" (238).

This quote is when O'Brien comes out as being a party member. I was completely shocked when I read this. O'Brien was suppose to be a friend to Winston, and turns out he was not. He is the perfect example of the expression keep your friends close and your enemies closer. His brotherhood was completely false and shows that not everyone around is trustworthy.

Supple: adj. lithe; ability to bend easily
truncheon :the club carried by a police officer

end of goldstein stuff :)

" A party member is expected to have no private emotions and no respites from enthusiasm. He is supposed to live in a continuous frenzy of hatred of foreign enemies and internal traitors, triumphs over victories, and self- abasement before the power and wisdom of the Party" (211).

This quote shows how a typical party member should act. This shows how much control this party has for rules. Like in our society, the party's rules for its member is like a sports team. The captains have a rule over the other members, but they all have to follow this rule made by the coach. The system shows how the people in the Inner and Outer Party should represent themselves as. The expectations of the member is relevant for the fact of how the slogan "War is Peace" is stated. It shows that the same feelings towards the other places is shown through the members rulebook.

intermittently: stopping or ceasing for a time; alternately ceasing and beginning again

cynicism: cynical disposition, character, or belief.

idk the goldstein stuff !

"The primary aim of modern warfare ( in the accordance of doublethink, this aim is simulanteouslyand not recognized by directing brains of the Inner party) is to use up the products of the machine without the general standard of living" (188).

The quote means that Goldstein is explaining that this is the rule of modern warfare in Oceania. This is also an exciting chapter because you find what modern day countries are in Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. The concepts Goldstein touches upon are pretty interesting and the fact that half the stuff he says is messed up. I'm confused but at the same time entertained.

impoverishment: to reduce to poverty
indefatigably: incapable of being tired out; not yielding to fatigue; untiring.

part dos chapters cuatro and cinco :)

"One never saw a double bed nowadays except in the home of proles. Winston had occasionally slept in one in his boyhood; Julia had never been in one before, so far as she could remember" (143).

This quote is significant because it represents how Julia and Winston's time eras differ. Winston had stated that he slept in a double bed before, meaning the time before the party. Julia had never slept in one, during the reign of the party. The two characters childhoods were in different eras, meaning that Winston had memories of life before the party. Julia grew up during the party's rule, and did not have the privilege to sleep in a double bed, and could not experience it as a child.

lunacy:insanity; mental disorder

part dos chapter tres !

"Not physically. Six months, a year- five years, conceivably. I am afraid of death" (136).

The quote shows how Winston is a human, and does fear things. I think the quote is significant because Winston's statement of I am afraid of death shows that he is overwhelmed and scared of the party. The party's control over everything actually puts a fear into many people, and they believe anything you do to disobey to the party will result in death.

1.lagged:to fail to maintain a desired pace or to keep up; fall or stay behind
2.dung:excrement, esp. of animals; manure.

Monday, February 23, 2009

part dos chapter uno

"On it written, in large unformed handwriting: I love you" (108).
This statement is ground breaking for Winston, because as he has repeated in part one was that he hated women. Now he saw the woman that fell off her bike and he has feelings for her. This woman that now came into his life is planning something on Sunday that is going to affect Winston in the future.

falsifying:to make false or incorrect, esp. so as to deceive
farthings: A coin formerly used in Great Britain worth one fourth of a penny.

ch.7&8

"There was a word for it in Newspeak: ownlife, it was called, meaning individualism and eccentricity" (82).

The quote shows how the erase of language is taken place throughout the book. They fact that the party can change anything instantly. Winston realizes that the party and its new language can erase the adjectives a person would describe themseleves as, but as an equal person.

preliminary:preceding and leading up to the main part, matter, or business; introductory; preparatory
Eccentricity:an oddity or peculiarity, as of conduct

Thursday, February 12, 2009

chapter 5 & 6 !

"By 2050 - earlier, probably - all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed." (53)

The quote spoken by Syme, who Winston constantly says he is going to be vaporized. The quote is significant because Syme is full of a lot of knowledge that is suppose to be erased. The fact that Winston constantly says he will be vaporized shows that Syme is loyal to big brother, but his intellect takes over him.

venerated: to regard or treat with reverence; revere.

zeal:fervor for a person, cause, or object; eager desire or endeavor; enthusiastic diligence; ardor.

1984 chapters 2 &3 :)

quote: "He, Winston Smith knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as a short time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist?" (34).

The quote I chose is significant because in the beginning of the story, people/ events that happened and were not suppose to, vanished. Also they were not suppose to talk about it. If that is the case why does Winston this detail of the past. This statement shows that Winston has different ways of thinking and how he remembers things that were suppose to be gone, but can't remember if he is 39 or 40.

5.1 -5.2

Othello: "I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this,/ Killing myself, to die upon a kiss." (5.2 354 - 355)

The quote means that Othello shows his final goodbye. I'm completely lost of the fact that Iago managed to stay alive, and practically everyone else died. I was so mad that he killed his wife too!

1.) reprobation: dammination

2.)notorious: out & out

4.2 - 4.3

Desdemona: "No as I am a Christian!/ If to perserve this vessel for my lord/ From any other foul unlawful touch/ Be not to be a strumpet, I am none."
Othello: "What not a whore?" ( 4.2 80- 84)

If I was Desdemona I would be extremely mad for being called a whore. She doesn't understand the fact that he husband is stuck under Iago's trance of lies. When he accuses her of cheating she denies it and was pretty mad. Iago's plan is quickly unfolding, and Desdemona's death could be approaching.

motive: cause
commoner: prostitute

4.1

Cassio: This is the monkeys on giving out. She is/ persuaded I will marry her out of her own love and/ flattery, not out of my promise." ( 4.1 129-131)

The quote represents how Iago made Othello hide away while he made Cassio talk about Bianca, but made it sound like it was Desdemona. This is like an episode of One Tree Hill or something. There is so much drama. It makes me want to yell at everyone and warn them what is going on. Iago, I have to admit is a pretty good villan.

hobbyhorse: prostitute
bawd: procuress

3.1 - 3.3

othello: "Avant! Be Gone! Thou hast set me on the/ rack./ I swear 'tis better to be much abused/ than but to know't a little." (3.3 332 - 333)

The quote tells how Othello is saying to Iago, you are putting me in the most awkward postion. Iago still deserves a slap. He is making Othello believe his crazy lies and is causing so much hurt. He tells Iago that he is believing that what he doesn't know doesn't hurt him.

1.) owedest: possesed
2.) poppy: drowsy

2.2 - 2.3

Cassio: "Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have/ lost my reputation ! I have lost the immortal part of /myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation,/ Iago, my reputation." (2.3 261-264)

This is when Cassio realizes oh crap i screwed up completely. This quote makes me want to punch Iago. He ruins everyones life and just tries to get what he wants. He is very manipulative and deserves a slap. He is a modern day home wrecker.

1.) imposition: external thing
2.) quillets: puns

2.1

Iago: "If I can fasten but one cup upon him/ With that which he hath drunk tonight already,/ He"ll be as full of quarrel and offense/ As my young mistress' dog. Now, my sick fool/ Roderigo,/ Whom love hath turned almost the wrong side out,/ To Desdemona hath tonight caroused/ Potations pottle-deep, and he's to watch./Three else of Cyprus, noble swelling spirits,/ That hold their honors in a wary distance,/ The very elements of this warlike isle,? Have I tonight flustered with flowing cups,/ And they watch too. Now, 'mongst this flock of/ drunkards/ Am I to put our cassio in some action/ That may offend the isle. But here they come."

This extremly long quote that took me twenty minutes to type, is about how Iago first puts one of his evil scam, silloqys together. He talks about how he is going to make all the main characters fight and turn against each other. This is pretty messed up and shows how Iago is completely messed up in the head.

1.) pottle - deep: to the bottom of the cup
2.) rouse: drink

3.4

"But jealous souls willnot be answered so;/ They are not ever jealous for the cause,/ But jealous for they're jealous. It is a monster/ Begot upon itself, born on itself." Emila 3.4 (158 - 161)

The quote above represents how Emila and Desdemona discuss how Othello's behavior of jealousy. Emila uses the words above carefully and shows how Othello is beginning to show these emotions and the affects its having on the new bride. Iago's plan is working right into place, and it shows how he can manipulate anyone to get his way.
